Off Ice

Sample Lakeland Hockey Off-Ice Program

Been getting a lot of questions on this lately so I thought I'd post something for you all.  Off-ice conditioning can play a huge role in player development.   You don't need heavy weights or specialized equipment to get started.  From Mini Mite to Midgets all of our kids should participate in some type of off-ice conditioning.  Wondering where you start?  I've included a document below that takes you through some simple ways to organize these activities and make them fun for all involved.  Even if you have a successful program up and running, take a moment to look at what I've posted.  Give me a shout if you have any questions.  I'd be happy to sit down with you and get you started or evaluate your current program.  Special thanks and shout out to J.P. and Denise Dumoulin for compiling the information and helping to create this program.

Off-Ice Hockey Strength and Conditioning

Hockey is like no other sport. It’s played on a different surface from which in itself requires adjustments in training and conditioning programs. Hockey training has spread off the ice to build muscle mass, develop speed and agility, increase stamina, increase slapshot power and most important avoid injuries. Proper and experienced training is important; conditioning a child has its own set of rules, it’s not the same conditioning a teenager or an adult.

Program Objectives:

  • To prevent common skating injuries
  • To enhance skating performance
  • Warm-up and cool down with flexibility training
  • Exercises performed will be biomechanically-specific to on ice skating skills
  • Drills will be related to the same energy systems and tactical movements utilized in games and practices
  • Increase agility, and coordination
  • Power training/plyometrics
  • Training programs will be age and level specific

Off-Ice Workout Room

The new off-ice training facility (formally called the Riley’s Room) is now open and accepting reservations.  Located upstairs, the off-ice room is a great place where you can perform workouts and/or pre-skate warm-up’s.

Scheduling is done direct through Julie at the arena.  Room is scheduled in one hour increments at a cost of $10 per hour. Reservations for the upcoming month are accepted starting the last week of the current month for Lakeland Hockey Association teams.  Reservations for all other Lakeland Arena programs open on the 1st day of the current month.

Teams are only able to book one month at a time.  A team that books the room is responsible for the fee whether it is used or not.  You will need to pay the fee at the snack bar prior to using the room or you can have Julie include it with your ice bill.  A responsible adult must be present at all times.

Call the arena at 248-666-1911 and book the room through Julie. The off-ice schedule will be on the Lakeland Arena website master schedule under OIR (click here).

Checking in/out of the off-ice room is done at the snack bar and is the same process used to get a locker room.  A coach will need to leave their keys and have an arena monitor check the room when finished.  The first time you use the off-ice room you are responsible for signing a waiver for Lakeland Arena.
